QA with Professor Paul Curzon, Professor of Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London Viewpoint careers advice blog

QA with Professor Paul Curzon, Professor of Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London Professor Paul Curzon is Professor of Science at Queen Mary, University of London. His research combines the areas of interaction design, automated reasoning and formal verification. The main focus of his work is on human error, extending the verification of hardware/software systems to human-computer systems. Do the coding initiatives schools are now using offer a platform for future employment? The increasing number of high-quality coding platforms aimed at schools is a really important development. They make learning programming fun and reduce the learning curve. In the past it was possible to program without really needing to understand the concepts. This has meant making the jump from, for example, programming in visual languages to textual languages too hard â€" the early programming has not prepared students for the jump. That is changing. It isnt just about learning programming, it is about gaining thinking skills to work in a high-tech economy. Only a fraction of those learning to program will go on to be programmers, but that isnt the point, any more than we expect schools to teach physics so that everyone will be a physicist. The algorithmic thinking skills you gain by learning to program matter. Just as students need to understand physics to understand how the physical world works, they need to understand computing to understand how the virtual world works. How important are coding skills among jobseekers? Part of the point is that coders can generate new employment, as has happened over the last 10 or 15 years. If a country wants to have an economic edge then having creative innovators who can code â€" make their ideas into a reality so many more jobs follow â€" is vitally important. Computer Science has changed the way the sciences and other disciplines are actually done, not just in using IT but in solving problems computationally. New industries are emerging and existing industries are changing â€" the emergence of algorithmic trading is one example. Having people who understand computational methods and can think algorithmically matters a lot, whether they are doing the coding or managers. Do business owners understand and appreciate the coding skills being taught at the moment, and how they could help their businesses improve their competitiveness? It is starting to happen. For a long time there has been a perceived wisdom that only basic IT skills matter generally. There is an increasing recognition that computational thinking skills do matter and can make a difference especially when combined with creativity. Is it difficult for students to choose the right language to study? The language isnt really the issue when learning to code. What matters is learning the underlying concepts. If you have learnt one language well then it is easy to pick up others in the same paradigm, procedural, object-oriented etc. Once youve learnt one paradigm well then picking up others is also easier. Programming is a skill, so what matters is putting in thousands of hours of coding. Thats one of the reasons it is important to start in school â€" to have the time to be really competent when you are looking for employment. You shouldnt be thinking about what is the language industry wants now it probably will have changed by the time you are looking for employment. Do you think the teaching of coding is clearly linked towards future employment? I think it is too early to say. Until the recent school syllabus change, very little programming has been taught in schools. In the past the link between computing and employment has not been made, but I think that is changing. Initially though, enjoying it for its own sake matters most. Coding and computational thinking skills go hand in hand but it is important we dont focus just on coding. Computing is much more than that, and it is that wider understanding that ultimately matters. Understanding human-computer interaction and interaction design are also important skills. Ultimately it is about learning problem solving skills: problem solving for people. How to conduct an interview in student media societies and outlets

Instructions to direct a meeting in understudy media social orders and outlets This post was composed by an outer contributor. Connor Gotto gives the prescribed procedures to understudy media individuals who are talking with somebody. One of the most energizing parts of understudy media is getting the chance to talk with someone. It's a break from the standard, a much needed development from expounding on the most recent SU outrage, and it's an opportunity for you to feel like you're really accomplishing something beneficial. In any case, when the fervor wears off, it tends to be a serious overwhelming possibility, particularly when you're new to the game. That is the reason we've assembled our best 5 hints for getting ready, composing, and leading the most ideal meetings. Who? What? Where? When? Why? These are the things you ought to ask directly off the bat: You have to know what it's identity is you're meeting (self-evident, I know, however on the off chance that you go in dazzle you're bound to fall flat) Discover what kind of meeting you will do. Is it a telephone or vis-à-vis? On the off chance that its the last mentioned, where it will occur? Record when its occurring in each journal you own. You would prefer not to be late! Likewise observe to what extent you have apportioned At last, you have to realize why you're doing the meeting, and precisely what you're assumed be concentrating on Do your exploration Almost certainly, you're not going to know all that much about whoever it is that you're meeting, and your perusers presumably won't either. You must overcome any issues, and ask quite a few inquiries with the goal that the perusers need to peruse the piece and get a desire for the individual. Thus, research is basic. Ensure you know all the basics their experience, profession, and ongoing happenings just as certain subtleties that can identify with your outlet. Odds are they will have some great uni stories to tell, and as a rule once you make them go they don't stop, so make sure you get your cash's worth! What's more, obviously, in the event that you don't have the foggiest idea about your stuff you're going to look ill-equipped and amateurish. To content or not to content? Probably the greatest mix-up you're probably going to make is composing an unbending content and adhering to it strictly. Trust us: it won't work. It's in every case great to have a general bearing that you need the discussion to go in, with a few key inquiries. However, anything else than that and you're simply not going to have time. On the off chance that you have 30 minutes, keep 4 or 5 focuses arranged should things go off course. In actuality, you'll see that once you get moving, the discussion heads out in its own direction. Keep in mind: on the off chance that you sound certain, they'll oblige you. Have no desires Go with us on this one. Perhaps the greatest dissatisfaction when talking comes when you don't get what you need and you can't toss a strap. The more you need to escape a meeting, the almost certain you are to be frustrated. Presently, we're not saying don't have objectives, however be sensible. Almost certainly, there are things that they can't discuss, and regardless of how enthusiastically you attempt you're not going to get it. Try not to burn through your time in case you're at an impasse, proceed onward. That way you're bound to get something you can run with, than be left with nothing by any stretch of the imagination! Appreciate it You will be one of numerous questioners that your subject addresses for the duration of the day, so make it one to recollect! Unwind. Try not to be excessively unbending. Make discussion. Try not to drive it. The best meetings happen when there's a decent connection between the questioner and interviewee and, trust us, it interprets onto the page. All things considered, this is extraordinary practice for that future media vocation, when youre meeting the fat cats! Customize Your Resume to the Job Opportunity

Customize Your Resume to the Job Opportunity Recently, I worked with a resume client that was extremely interested in a new job opportunity. In fact, the past 15 years of his career were spent conducting sales in an industry which fit quite appropriately with the new potential job. Rather than utilize the template-style resumes he had used the past, we created a customized resume specifically for this job. As a very successful sales professional, he had more than 10 people willing to be references for him. However, he had three potential references who were all employed at the new job location. How perfect! What better way to customize your resume than to list the successful, trusted, and talented individuals already working there. Next, we were careful to use terminology that would be commonplace in the new organization. This would show the employer that he understood the business jargon and was familiar with the laws and regulations of the industry. Finally, I asked him what it was about the potential job location that he liked. He said the opportunity would be challenging and he knew the company was focused on growth. That led to a summary statement we were able to use at the top of his resume: Ambitious and experienced sales professional seeks to build long-term relationships within a challenging, growth-oriented organization  The customization was well worth it, as his resume is appropriately positioned for the job opportunity. And, he now has a resume that is built well, but still has the capability of being easily changed for the future.
